Module 5 Lesson 1: Ethical AI Principles
As AI systems gain power over business decisions, the ethical weight of their choices increases. It's no longer enough for an AI to be "Fast"; it must be Fair, Accountable, and Transparent.
1. The Four Pillars of Responsible AI
1. Transparency (Openness)
Users should know they are interacting with an AI. They should also (ideally) understand why the AI made a certain decision.
- Business Application: Don't use "Stealth Bots" that pretend to be human on social media.
2. Fairness (Equity)
AI should treat all groups of people equally. It shouldn't provide worse service or higher prices based on race, gender, or age.
- Business Application: Periodically audit your "Hiring AI" or "Credit Scoring AI" for disparate impact.
3. Accountability (Responsibility)
If an AI makes a harmful mistake, who is responsible? The developer? The company? The user?
- Business Application: Always maintain a "Human-in-the-Loop" for critical decisions so a person remains accountable for the outcome.
4. Safety & Robustness (Reliability)
The AI should perform consistently and resist manipulation (Prompt Injection). It should "Fail Safely" rather than causing a catastrophe.
- Business Application: Implement rate-limiting and input-filtering to prevent "Rogue" behaviors.
2. The "Should" vs. "Could" Gap
Just because you could use AI for something doesn't mean you should.
- Scenario A: Use AI to scan public social media accounts to predict an employee's "Pregnancy status" to avoid giving them a raise.
- Can we do it?: Yes.
- Should we do it?: Absolutely not. (And it's likely illegal in most jurisdictions).
3. Developing Your Corporate AI Manifesto
Every company should have a short document that outlines their "AI Values."
- "We will never use AI to deceive our customers."
- "Human oversight is required for all financial commitments over $500."
- "We will protect our users' privacy like it's our own."
4. The Cost of Unethical AI
- Reputational Damage: A "Bias Scandal" can destroy a decade of brand trust in a week.
- Legal Liability: Regulators (like those in the EU) are increasingly imposing massive fines for non-compliant AI.
- Talent Attrition: The best AI engineers want to work for companies that use the technology responsibly.
Exercise: The Dilemma Decoder
Scenario: You are developing an AI for a "Health Insurance" company. The AI discovers that people who buy "Cat Litter" are 5% less likely to have heart attacks. (A real statistical correlation found in some datasets).
- The Opportunity: Should you lower insurance premiums for cat owners?
- The Ethical Risk: Is it "Fair" to charge non-cat owners more? What if someone is allergic to cats? Are you discriminating against them?
- The Decision: How would you justify your choice to the public if this algorithm was leaked to the press?
