For every "Magic" moment in GenAI, there is a potential "Malpractice" moment. As a business professional, your job is to be the Safety Driver for the AI. This lesson covers the three critical risks of GenAI.
1. Hallucinations: Perfectly Confident lies
An LLM is a probabilistic engine, not a database. It doesn't "Check its facts" by default.
- The Problem: The AI can generate a legal case citation that looks real, has a plausible-sounding judge, and a citation number, but does not exist.
- The Cause: The model is optimized for "Likelihood," not "Truth." If "Truth" is hard to calculate, "Likely-sounding text" is the next best thing.
- Business Mitigation: Human-in-the-Loop (HITL). Never publish AI output without a human verify any specific facts, numbers, or dates.
2. Training Bias: The Mirror Effect
Models are trained on human data. Humans are biased. Therefore, models are biased.
- Gender Bias: Asking an AI to "Show a picture of a CEO" often results exclusively in men.
- Cultural Bias: AI often assumes Western norms and languages are the "Default."
- Business Impact: If your AI-driven hiring tool or lending algorithm is biased, you face severe legal and reputational risk.
- Mitigation: Diverse Red Teaming. Test your AI with a diverse group of people to identify these patterns before the public does.
3. Data Privacy: The "Leak" Risk
When you type a secret into a "Public" AI (like the free version of ChatGPT), you are essentially giving that data to the model provider.
- The Risk: Your employees paste confidential source code or Q3 strategy docs into AI to "Help summarize." That data can then show up in the AI's training set for other users.
- Business Mitigation: Use Enterprise-Grade APIs.
- Rule: Use a version of the tool where the contract states: "Your data will not be used to train our models."
4. The Responsible AI Checklist
Before deploying a GenAI feature, ask:
- Verifiability: How do we check if the answer is true?
- Attribution: Can the AI show us the "Source" of its information? (e.g., Use RAG).
- Privacy: Is this an "Enterprise" endpoint, or are we leaking data?
- Bias: Have we tested this for stereotypes or unfair treatment?
Exercise: Spot the "Halliucination"
Task: Paste this prompt into a free AI (like ChatGPT or Claude): "Tell me about the famous legal case 'Smith v. Thompson 2024' regarding AI copyright."
- What did the AI say? (Wait, it's 2025 now, so if the case doesn't exist, it might make one up or tell you it doesn't exist).
- Verify: Try to find that same case on Google or a legal registry.
- How would a "Junior Associate" at a law firm get in trouble if they used this AI response for a real client memo?
